The Seattle Mariners are 35-47, 13 games out of first place in the American League West.
They have made very little noise on the field.
But the team generated a number of headlines yesterday after flying the gay pride flag during a home game at Safeco Field, honoring the landmark Supreme Court decisions of the week: dismissing Prop 8 in California and striking down DOMA.
The move came on the same day as Seattle’s 39th annual Pride Parade, with the flag waving atop the pole typically reserved for the Washington Nationals.
“#Mariners make history, becoming first major professional team to fly Pride flag, today at Safeco Field,” TV reporter Chris Daniels Tweeted along with the above photo.
Most folks admire the Mariners for making such a gesture, while critics say a baseball game should be free from politics.
