Sinkhole Swallows Pond in California

A sinkhole swallowed a pond on Sunday in Newcastle, California, stunning local homeowner Mark Korb, who woke up to see it completely drained away.

In its place, "This looks like the moon," he told NBC News.

The sinkhole managed to drain the entire pond in just one night, in the span of 4-5 hours, after rupturing the ground beneath it and stunning its owner.

The report comes just weeks after a Florida sinkhole underneath a Tampa-area house devoured a man as he laid in his bedroom. He is still missing.

Sinkholes are often caused by groundwater washing away minerals and creating instability underground. In Korb's case, area mining may be to blame.
