Park Jae-sang, better known as PSY, turns 35 today.

Happy birthday to the “Gangnam Style” performer!

In 2012, the rapper went from being unknown outside of his native Korea to a genuine global superstar, thanks entirely to his international hit song.

“Hit” may be the understatement of all time.

“Gangnam Style” is not only the most-watched YouTube video of all time, but the only one to amass a billion views – all in a matter of just five months.

It’s inspired countless parodies and become a phenomenon – one that goes beyond mere dance moves or lyrics no one in the U.S. really understands.

So you may be surprised to learn how he plans on capping off 2012: by “ending” the song with a performance on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.” He tells MTV News:

“Being in Times Square on New Year’s Eve is already special – it’s the biggest stage in the universe – plus it’s my birthday, so, with all that, it may be the ending of ‘Gangnam Style.”

“I mean, what better way to do it? It’s my biggest and most meaningful birthday.”

“The song became too popular, and so you start to have some concern about its life period,” he said, explaining his decision to shelve the track in 2013.

Gotta respect that, not wanting to be a one-hit wonder. Although that may be inevitable, when said hit is without a doubt the biggest in the history of YouTube.

In related news, it’s also Gabby Douglas’ birthday!
