Tom Cruise has still got it.
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol continues to dominate the holiday box office, raking in an estimated $31.3 million over the three-day (Friday to Sunday) weekend.
That represents a 6 percent jump from Christmas weekend, when it also led the field. Ghost Protocol, the fourth entry in the franchise, has now made $134.1M total.
M:I-4 could top the first Cruise-led installment, which earned $181 million in 1996. It’s already surpassed Mission: Impossible 3, which topped out at $134 million.
In second place this weekend was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which rose 9 percent to $22.1 million. The sequel has taken in $132.1 million in 17 days.
The original Sherlock Holmes, by comparison, earned $165.2 million by this point. Chipwrecked jumped an impressive 45 percent to finish third at $18.3 million.
