Tom Bosley, who played the father of Richie Cunningham on the famous ’70s sitcom about the ’50s, ABC’s Happy Days, died Tuesday in his home. He was 83.
The actor, who a Tony starring as the beloved NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in the Pulitzer-Prize-winning 1959 musical Fiorello!, died of a staph infection.

Bosley also made a memorable mark in the 1964 Peter Sellers cult comedy The World of Henry Orient, as the husband of Angela Lansbury’s character.
After Happy Days, he often co-starred with Lansbury on Murder She Wrote. Reacting to Bosley’s death, Happy Days star Henry Winkler expressed sadness.
“I’m in shock, I really am,” he told Los Angeles’s KNX-1070 Radio. “I spoke to him just a few weeks ago and he seemed to be getting his strength back.”
