Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough earned the top score on Dancing With the Stars last night, cementing their status as one of the couples of beat this season.

But the aftermath of their jive may have been even more notable.

As Brooke Burke turned to the audience and warned them that without their votes, Jennifer could follow David Hasselhoff out the door, audible booing began.

Derek and Jennifer were overshadowed by an audience member.

“There’s booing in the ballroom – we don’t know why,” a perplexed Brooke reported. “Why is there booing?” Grey wonders, since she and Derek did great.

Cut to host Tom Bergeron, sitting next to Sarah Palin in the crowd.

“All right, thank you, Brooke,” Tom said, with no mention of the booing. “I’m here with guest ballroom commentator Sarah Palin, who joins us from Alaska.”

Moderate applause from the audience. So was she booed or not?

ABC says the booing wasn’t directed at Palin, but rather at the fact that Jennifer Grey had received “only” a trio of 8s from the judges. A good cover story.

“They were just expressing their feelings about a really, really good dance,” a network spokeswoman told the L.A. Times. “It’s not at all unusual.” Mmm.

See for yourself here and draw your own conclusions …

Asked for her thoughts on the show, Palin said “This is amazing – it’s so exciting, it’s great to see all this courage and joy and exuberance by every dancer.”

Her thoughts on the judges.

“Oh, the judges? … Okay, now, it’s like before a hockey game – you’re not going to chew out the refs before your team is up on the ice! You guys are great!”

Her favorite dancer so far?

“Oh, my goodness, they’re all amazing, they really are,” she gushed. “This is great! Bristol’s not up yet. Bristol the Pistol, yeah, that’s who we’re rooting for!”

And this concludes Dancing With the Stars’ sideshow for September 27. Bristol Palin, for her part, really did a nice job quickstepping, as did Audrina Patridge.

Brandy disappointed a bit with her jive, and with her lack of chemistry with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. We’re gonna need to start some dating rumors soon, guys.

Rick Fox’s jive, full of rhythm and power, was a hit, and Kurt Warner did a better job equaling Fox this week, looking more comfortable jiving than waltzing.

Florence Henderson held her own … at least compared to than Michael Bolton. “We have a 3?” Tom Bergeron said incredulously when Bruno doled one out.

That about sums it up. The underscored Margaret Cho, Florence and The Situation would be candidates to leave if Bolton weren’t clearly the worst Monday.

Here’s how the night’s scores ended up:

Jennifer Grey & Derek Hough: 24
Audrina Patridge & Tony Dovolani: 23
Bristol Palin & Mark Ballas: 22
Kyle Massey & Lacey Schwimmer: 22
Brandy & Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 21
Kurt Warner & Anna Trebunskaya: 21
Rick Fox & Cheryl Burke: 21
Florence Henderson & Corky Ballas: 19
Margaret Cho & Louis van Amstel: 18
The Situation & Karina Smirnoff: 18
Michael Bolton & Chelsie Hightower: 12
