This is how you know you’ve made a serious cultural impact: When even your supposed rivals take time to pay you tribute.

In honor of David Letterman retiring on May 20, Jimmy Kimmel will not air a new episode of his talk show.

Jimmy Fallon, meanwhile, took five minutes out of The Tonight Show on Tuesday to talk about how his eight grade teacher had predicted he would take over for Letterman someday.

He also recalled his final appearance on The Late Show and quoted Letterman verbatim from the latter’s emotional first episode back after 9/11.

There’s only one requirement for any of us, and that is to be courageous – because courage, as you might know, defines all other human behavior, Letterman said at the time.

"David Letterman is courageous," said Fallon. "Have a nice retirement, Dave."

Earlier this week, Tom Hanks used a selfie stick to take a picture with Letterman, while George Clooney recently handcuffed himself to Dave.
