David Cook and Adam Lambert have come a very long way.

The singers are each talented, handsome and, by all accounts, solid, moral, well-behaved individuals. But we're forcing Cook and Lambert to turn against one another below!

A couple days after Adam Cook, the brother of last year's American Idol champion, passed away, David Cook has reached out to fans.

Impressively, the singer took part in the Race for Hope in Washington, D.C. yesterday. On his My Space page, he says he never considered pulling out of the charitable event.

"My brother never wanted his illness to affect others," Cook writes. "That was evident in the fact that he wanted his illness to have no part in my experience on Idol, a point he was quite adamant about. So, with that wish in mind, I ran and was involved with the event as an homage to him.

"I want to again thank everyone who donated to the race and continues to donate, sent a kind email, posted thoughts and prayers, called, etc," Cook continues. "I take it as affirmation that my brother was the great man that I knew, and whose ideals I constantly try to uphold in myself. It is with those ideals in tow that I vow to continue to speak out in hopes of raising whatever necessary to help eliminate cancer entirely."

Following a decade-long battle with cancer, David Cook's brother, Adam, died yesterday.

The American Idol winner made the difficult announced this morning, prior to the Race for Hope 5K in Washington, D.C.

"I actually lost my brother yesterday to a brain tumor and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else right now," Cook told the crowd at the brain cancer research benefit, at which Cook served as the grand marshal and competitor, as his team had raised more than $40,000.

Adam Cook had battled the disease throughout Cook's American Idol run last year.

As American Idol gets set to premiere its eighth season tonight - remember to take an early look at contestants now - a pair of former finalists on the show have broken up.

David Cook and Kimberly Caldwell are no longer a couple.

"Kimberly and David ended their relationship just before the holidays," Caldwell's rep said. "The couple remain good friends and, being very private people, appreciate their privacy at this time."

The couple began dating last May.

With his debut album coming out tomorrow, and a legion of fans greeting him at every performance, life can be a bit crazy for American Idol champion David Cook.

Fortunately, he has a lovely girlfriend to help him through the bizarre times.

"I think she just gets that this is all nuts," Cook told People Magazine of Kimberly Caldwell, a season two finalist on American Idol. "She's a nice break from the chaos."

Caldwell, of course, enjoys a burgeoning singing career of her own. Cook says the couple won't perform a duet, but it's clear they are making sweet music off the stage together.

American Idol announced its season eight premiere date this week - circle your calendar for January 13, fans! - but the focus is still largely on the show's most recent winner, David Cook.

He releases his debut album on November 18 and has been spotted out with girlfriend Kimberly Caldwell. Life ain't shabby for the crooner.

Regarding fame since his American Idol victory, Cook recently told Entertainment Weekly:

"I still feel like that awkward musician; I think I always will. That's a huge component of me staying kind of humbled and grounded about the whole thing: I get the flimsiness of it. I get that it could all go away...I've got guys that I'm playing with that I love to death, and I'm playing music that I think we all really get into, and as long as we've got that and a place to play, I'm good."

As Britney Spears' fans circle December 2 on their calendar, in celebration of that artist's next CD release date, David Cook fans can now get psyched, as well.

The American Idol champion's debt album will hit stores on November 18.

Accorrding to Cook's label, 19 Recordings/RCA Records, the singer teamed with Grammy-winning producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Kid Rock) on the studio album. Will you buy it?

Now that he's dating Kimberly Caldwell, it may not matter very much.

But David Cook says he was never really a ladies man, lacking the confidence necessary to sweep a potential mate off her feet.

"Looking a pretty woman in the eye and convincing her I'm worth taking a chance on is different," Cook said recently, when asked to compare his stage bravado with his personal life. "It takes a specific brand of guts, and it's not the kind I have."

David Cook may not be smooth, but the American Idol champion wouldn't have to say much to win over most women.
