Whites-Only Scholarship Causes Outrage, Spurs Debate at BU

by at . Comments

The Boston University College Republicans' news whites-only scholarship has sparked national attention, debate, and in some cases outrage.

The group's president admits his goal in establishing a $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship was to kick the proverbial hornets' nest.

Mission accomplished, and then some.

Whites Only Debate

"To tell you the truth, we didn't see this coming," Joe Mroszczyk said. "The Drudge Report picked it up yesterday, and today I just finished a round of national interviews."

"It's kind of overwhelming."

Applicants for the group's award must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher; must write two essays; and must be at least one-quarter Caucasian.

The application offers an explanation: "We believe that racial preferences in all their forms are perhaps the worst form of bigotry confronting America today."

According to Mroszczyk, his group is offering the scholarship merely to point out "how ridiculous it is to have any sort of racially based scholarship."

At BU, for example, he notes that students who are at least one-quarter Hispanic can apply for a National Hispanic Recognition Scholarship.

"There are poor, white, academically gifted students who need that money just as much," Mroszczyk said, noting that he got the idea from a nearby college.

Two years ago a chapter of the College Republicans at Roger Williams University also offered a $250 whites-only scholarship, he points out.

"We are not doing this as any kind of white supremacy thing. Not at all. I just want to have a dialogue about racial preference," Mroszczyk said.

It seems as if Mroszczyk has gotten his wish.

People from across the country are now weighing in on the idea through e-mail and the radio - and his fellow BU students are having their say too.

"It's a poor way to talk about affirmative action," said David Coreas, the 21-year-old senior who is president of the Latino fraternity Phi Iota Alpha at BU.

"If they want to have a scholarship, then let them have a scholarship, but they're stirring up controversy in the wrong way. We have to look at the situation honestly."

"Caucasians tend to have a higher per capita income than Latinos and other minorities," Coreas notes. "We have to have scholarships to survive."

Coreas said he would welcome an honest dialogue about race and affirmative action, while Mroszczyk admits even some of his friends are at a loss.

"They said I can't believe you're doing this," he said.

And for all the talk, there are still no takers for the scholarship. The application has been available since November 7, and so far not one student has filled it out.

Coreas, for one, says he would try to apply for it, if only he were eligible.

"I wish I could: That $250 could help me pay for textbooks," he said.

Should any scholarships be decided based on race?

I agree what's wrong with an all White Scholarship? Matter of fact what are the sources of those scholarships directed towards Blacks today? Right they are white.

I teach in an urban high school. The school is full of impoverished, of all backgrounds. Colleges are throwing money at the feet of minorities. But for whites, particularly white male, there is little or nothing. An average or below average academic black student will have their college almost completely paid for. While a gifted white student will basically have to borrow more money then they can probably afford to get through school.
And don't get me started on athletes. For every 1 successful scholarship athlete there are 5 that lose their scholarship because of poor grades. What a waste!
I'm not saying that scholarships are not needed. What I'm saying is that they should be based on need, not race. And if a downer put a stipulation on it that's their choice.

Kim you are so ignorant. Minorities have way more opportunities than white people. And they definitely did not start racism. It has been around way before "white" people came to america. This generation had NOTHING to do with slavery nor are the majority racist, and condemning them based on their white skin color is ignorant AND RACIST. It is just something minorities like to use to their advantage. Have you noticed that it is always blacks, hispanics, etc. who pull the racist card? If yall would stop trying to mooch and work hard like SOME white people do (bc not all white people are rich and not all blacks, hispanics, etc. are poor. Clearly an ignorant statement) then you would have just as much success as you could want.

What Whites already have so much man wtf thats why black and latin create stuff like this cuz we dont have shit cuz of our color and its harder on us man.Blacks and Hispanic deserve to have scholarships because they face so much racist issue throughout life and so on.White people dont suffer based on the color of there skin like these groups do.when black and hispanics apply to a scholarship with whites they could have the highest gpa's and get denied it because of there name and people assuming they are black or hispanic it aint right

So it's the National Hispanic Recognition Program not scholarship they don't provide money for schooling they just put your name on a national list if you qualify the list goes out to all participating colleges....so basically it's just putting your name out there, tryin to get ya noticed cus colleges look for people from minorities cus if they do good it makes their school look better for some strange reason. So bottom line having a better shot of getting into school cus your something other then white is never going to change colleges like it that way....buuuut on the upside it really isn't that hard to get scholarships if you've got 3.0 GPA or higher even if you white you've just got to look for them

I am a parent of a high school student who will be a freshman at college in the fall of 2013. It is my first time going thru the college process.....it has truly opened my eyes. I have never felt so hurt, shocked, and insulted by being a white family. We have struggled to make ends meet and my daughter has worked extremely hard during her school years that she is so deserving of a scholarship to help us. Unfortunately the majority of scholarships are for black or hispanic students. It is NOT right. It is so UNFAIR that I am surprised there are complaints against a 'white' only award AND to make matters worse, you only need to be 1/4 white!!!!! It's a joke and the racial issues will never improve as long as this discrimination of whites continues!

WHAA, WHAA, WHAA. Seriously, Why do people go out of the way to BITCH about something. Scholsrship's based on race is a JOKE!!! should be based on academic's and family income. So if you want scholarship's for hispanic's or black's guess what the whites get one to. Remember not all white's are loaded with cash.

@ just another barney.

But Whites Started Discrimination and Racism so Yes when you start it and control so much Blacks and Hispanics are minorities and dont get much. Yall Have White scholarships but that not what its called yall have scholarships and make everyone apply but only choose a few like 5 out of 100 colored ppl of any race so come man.

I honestly don't understand why people are raising hell with this? There are HUNDREDS of Black-only scholarships.. And when there's a white anything, it is racist. I don't understand. I pray for the day when race isn't such an issue.... It's truly sad.

@ Leslie

Well with grammar like that, of course you would be upset Leslie. If you cannot actively utilize the language that you have spent years learning then you have no business with receiving funding to pursue a higher education. By high school no matter your ethnicity, religion, ect. you should be just about ready to be a functioning member of society.

@ guest22

Go murder yourself please

Then again reading some of these comments it's no wonder people can't move forward because there is some things on here that are truly saddening.

Alright before I chime in a bit about myself...
I have been in an interracial relationship for four years.
I'd be very much in favor of seeing scholarships for things strictly based on race to be undone. The claim is that you mean to include everyone by offering this well this group seems to be trying to accomplish the same thing. The message of equality is beginning to become a bit blurred. While I am all for never forgetting the sins of the past I don't like the idea that we keep punishing today's generation constantly for what was committed by there ancestors. There are so many movements that people can get behind these days "anti-bullying", "gay and lesbian rights", you name it in today's culture you should be able to find it. While previous generations did things like say we needed equality and then proceeded to fight for it this generation has been truly struggling to finally embrace the concept of equality where racial matters are concerned. How about more scholarships that recognize a persons deeds and not a persons skin color no matter what it is? So where this poll is concerned I voted Yes, they help level the playing field. It may not line up with some people's reasoning but then again It just might.
