So God Made a Farmer Super Bowl Ad: Weird or Wonderful?

by at . Comments

There was a blackout, a nearly incredible comeback and a controversial VW ad some consider racist.

But the impression many viewers were left with following XLVII was an unusual commercial that aired in the fourth quarter for Dodge Ram.

It lasted two minutes and it featured Paul Harvey intoning that God needed "somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the field, milk cows again, eat supper, then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board..." so He made a farmer.

Using the Big Guy Upstairs to sell an automobile? It's no wonder this spot continues to make headlines and generate buzz.

What do you think of the Dodge Ram commercial?

For those of you who don't know, RAM is sponsoring the national organization known as FFA (Future Farmers of America). RAM created this commercial for the FFA organization. Not to recruit farmers but to show why farmers are there and what they do. FFA is probably one of the most important unsung heroes of America's youth. For those enrolled in a high school in any 50 states with the program, I recommend joining your FFA chapter even if you don't plan on being a farmer. You'll be glad you did once you see what FFA has to offer.

The best commercial of all the Superbowl commercials. It was strong, clean, decent and breathtaking. Love the idea of Dodge Ram reminding viewers what a great country we live in and what great Americans we have in the American Farmer! Not a bad truck either. I think I'll get one.

It's fine that Dodge wants to celebrate the American farmer but why must they bring God into it? Stating that "God" created the farmer isn't stated fact. If anything "created" the farmer it would be the discovery of irrigation and animal husbandry not some all knowing and invisible man in the sky.
Major corporations that have all of the money to be as influential as they want to be need to keep religion out. We as a people are already dumb enough as is.

It wasn't just a weird ad, it was offensive. Everybody works hard. Everybody tries to do the best they can under difficult circumstances. But now one group of mostly white, mostly Western mostly males are made directly by God? Nice to know that the rest of us will just have to go on without that celestial pat on the head. The commercial was fatuous and obnoxious.

seriously? nobody said anything about no one else working. It was a Paul Harvey piece from years back. And truly, without farmers, what food would we have? From vegetables to meat, all from a farmer somewhere. People being so easily offended, is one of the reasons this country is the way it is. Well done Dodge, well done.

You know, I'm not an overly religious person but I just don't get this offense that people take when God is mentioned? Why does everyone get in such a dither if someone professes to believe in God? It seems as though you can now throw the F-bomb around like a cupcake on TV and no one blinks but if you mention God it incites hate. What's up with that??
