Recent studies show that working out won???t help you lose weight. So why go to the gym? To check people out, of course. But New York Sports Clubs are just as diverse as the city itself. Each gym is like a little litmus test of neighborhood???s population. This week, we investigate all the variety New York Sports Clubs have to offer.
For all our Brooklyn pride, all rents being equal, we know the Village is better.
It???s close to everything, has great restaurants, a fun nightlife and lots of history. Even though it???s overrun with Starbucks, let???s face it, if the area had a White Castle, it would probably keep its ice machine on all the time.
Sadly, all rents are not equal. The Village is way more expensive than the Upper East Side and Cobble Hill. However much the new Shins album has changed their life, people living in the Village are still rich.
At the Mercer gym, the men know better than to wear their investment banking t-shirts out, even to the gym. They???re fit, young, and mostly straight. Packs of them can be spotted lifting weights late into the night.
It???s a truism that money looks better on men than women, and the Mercer gym proves it. The women aren???t super fit. Maybe they should be honest with themselves and switch to white wine.
Probably because of an office policy, few people have beards or visible tattoos. The only ones who do look suspiciously like NYU students, who incidentally are the only ones with interesting day jobs at this gym.
Extra: MTV News correspondent John Norris goes to this gym. He does not watch MTV on the TVs.

I need more cowbell! says:
I was taught that 30 minutes of exercise at a perceived rate of exertion of 6 or more, 3-5 times a week stimulates your hgh production therefore stimulating weight loss. It is also a commonly held theory that a higher ratio of muscle mass/lower fat ratio burns more calories during exertion.
