Have you heard: there???s this new thing called roller derby? Actually, it???s an old thing, from the 70s, but it???s totally hot, like right now!
Normal women???astronauts even???like to take out their aggression in the rink. And yesterday was the Gotham Roller Derby Championship. That???s a totally fresh angle on the story about the Gotham Roller Derby from two years ago. Let???s give it 850 words in the City Section.
But roller derby must be for single, active women, right? No, no. Moms are totally into roller derby too! And their kids hold up signs like ???My Mommy Will Kick Your Mommy???s Butt.??? That endearing anecdote will definitely make up for the fact that ???there???s no official record of the number of roller derby players nationwide, let alone how many of them are parents.??? Put it in Thursday Styles.
But surely this trend just relates to savvy city women. Wait, hold the phone. Even regular women in upstate New York hamlets play roller derby, too. Sounds like a perfect Our Towns column.
You know what else is awesome about roller derby? It???s such a visual sport, what with the costumes and aggressive plays. It would make a great photo spread for Lens.
Ok, reporters, be on the look out for minority roller derby players. There???s a great story to be had about Colombia and Mexican immigrants who have found companionship and fun playing roller derby together.

Are you kidding? I thought this went out — for at least the third time — five years ago.

Actually, back that decade up at least another ten years if not more. As an 8 year old living in central CA, I watched the “Bay City Bombers” with wild woman Ann Cavullo. She was soooo edgy that she predated punk hair dye by at least 20 years. She even appeared in a game rocking platinum hair with pink and blue polka dots!
That and “Big Time Wrestling” along with all of the “top of the pop” daytime shows made the ’60s the most kick ass decade of all to be a kid.

Hey – That’s my photo and it was used without notice or permission. I guess that means it’s stolen. Or you’ll pay me. Awesome!
