Team USA swimmer Ryan Lochte took the lead after the first butterfly leg of the 400 IM and never relinquished it, winning his first gold of the London Games.
In a much anticipated rivalry, Michael Phelps came in out of the medals in fourth-place with a disappointing time of 4:09:28 after barely making it past the qualifying heat.
Don’t count Phelps out just yet. With three more individual events — the 200 butterfly (Tuesday), 200 IM (Thursday) and 100 butterfly (Friday) and several opportunities to medal in relay competitions he could still become the most decorated Olympian ever.
