Peter Falk, best known for his four time Emmy Award winning role as “Columbo,” has died at the age of 83.

Falk, a two-time Academy Award nominee, passed away at his home in Beverly Hills Thursday evening. No cause of death has been released.

The actor has battled dementia and Alzheimer’s disease since 2007.

Falk, who was born in New York City and grew up in Ossining, NY, had an eye removed due to cancer at the age of three. He was told he would never make it in the movies or TV because of his glass eye. After theater roles, Falk made his film debut in 1958 in “Wind Across the Everglades,” establishing himself as a talented character actor.

Falk is survived by his wife, Shera Danese Falk, and two adopted daughters, Jackie and Catherine.
