Lebron James became a free-agent on July 1, and began courting the New York Kicks, the New Jersey Nets, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat. During a Live ESPN Decision Special on Thursday, the decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers became official.

James told ESPN: “This fall I am taking my talents to South Beach and play with the Miami Heat. The major factor was the best opportunity for me to win, to win now and for the future also. Winning is the most important thing for me. I feel like this is going to be the best opportunity.”

You will note that the familiar number 23 has now been replace by a 6. He decided to give up the old number out of respect for his hero Michael Jordan. He used #6 on his Olympic jersey, and it is also the day of the month at his first son was born. He filed the official paperwork with the NBA Office on Monday.

UPDATE: Friday it was party time at American Airlines Arena in Miami, when “The Three Kings” appeared for a celebration. The Dream Team of Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James put on their 1, 3, and 6 jersey’s and thrilled the crowd with their antics and comments – PHOTOS and VIDEO.
