NASCAR team owner Jack Roush was involved in a plane crash Tuesday night at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was transported to Theda Clark Medical Center in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to serious, but stable condition according to his attending physician Dr. Kevin Wasco.
Rouch and his 61-year-old passenger Brenda Strickland, both of Michigan, were in a twin engine Hawker Beechcraft Premier business jet that skidded off the north south runway during their landing at 6:15 p.m. The plane is registered to Roush Fenway Racing, LLC.
According to witnesses, the plane was clearly in distress, and appeared to stall in the air, then came down with the wings at odd angles. Roush suffered facial lacerations that may require surgery, according to Geoff Smith, Roush Fenway Racing president – see bloody photo below.
Roush, 68, who previously survived a 2002 plane crash when his plane ended up in an Alabama lake, had flown in for the annual EAA AirVenture Convention, where he has a performance display in the Ford Hanger. He participated in a presentation on Tuesday morning and was scheduled to sign autographs later this week.
Roush Fenway Sprint Cup drivers include David Ragan, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards.
The NTSB and FAA are investigating the crash. Officials indicate it could be weeks before the cause is known.
