Former First Lady Barbara Bush, 83, had a heart operation on Wednesday in Houston. Family spokesman Jim McGrath reported that Mrs. Bush had been experiencing shortness of breath last week and it was determined that her aortic valve had begun to harden.

The open heart surgery to replace Mrs. Bushes aortic valve was performed at Houston’s Methodist Hospital and took 2-1/2 hours. The procedure was deemed successful and Mrs. Bush is reported to be resting comfortably. She is expected to remain hospitalized for a week to 10 days.
