The remaining Top 6 contestants on American Idol were tasked with singing Shania Twain songs on Tuesday April 27, 2010. The country artist mentored the AI hopefuls and provided enthusiastic encouragement.
With just one month until the finale, things are getting interesting and the judges were for the most part complementary and upbeat with their feedback. Last week Simon and Kara were ready for a lynching with their caustic and biting commentary.
Lee DeWyze sang “You’re Still The One”. Randy thought it was a “pretty good job”. Ellen told him “you couldn’t look cuter”. Kara said “good job”, and Simon declared the performance “the perfect song for you”.
Michael Lynche chose “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing”. Randy said, “Great job, you were really in the zone.” Ellen thought it was “beautiful”. Kara said “great job”. Cowell pronounced the performance “a little bit wet”, “girlie”.
Casey James went with “Don’t”. Randy, Ellen and Kara agreed he did a really good job. Simon called it his best performance so far and suggested her give Shania Twain a big kiss on the lips.
Crystal Bowersox went with “No One Needs to Know”, which she said was a message to her boyfriend in the audience. The judges all agreed that it was not their favorite performance, while acknowledging that she can sing anything. Simon went so far as to call the performance “limp”. He felt she sang with no conviction, the performance was “forgettable” and it was the first week he hadn’t loved her song.
Aaron Kelly sang “You’ve Got A Way”. The judges thought he did a good job. Simon was the most expansive with, “For the first time in weeks you did really well tonight.”
Siobhan Magnus went with “Any Man of Mine”. She has taken the most criticism in recent weeks but earned some praise with this one. Randy said “I loved it.” Ellen said “fantastic”, while Kara simply stated “guess who’s back”. Simon said “I really, really liked it. He tempered that with one barb — “the screaming at the end might have been a bit much.”
