Richard Gere and his wife of 11 years, Carey Lowell, have split and are planning to file for divorce.

Lowell, an actress and former model, has been living apart from her husband for some time with the couple’s 13-year-old son Homer.

A New York Post source cites the couple’s vastly different lifestyles as the reason their union has hit the skids.

The 64-year-old actor wed his wife in 2002. Over time he has come to prefer the quiet solitude of their residence in Bedford, New York.

Carrey, 52, reportedly enjoys spending the majority of her time “socializing” in North Haven, CT, where another of their homes is situated next door to her fun-loving neighborhood pal Jimmy Buffett and his family.

Unfortunately for her, the North Haven waterfront mansion, Strongheart Manor, was listed for sale in July 2013 for $65 million. The 1902 home features twelve bedrooms and twelve bathrooms plus two additional guest houses, an outdoor fireplace pavilion, and a tea house set in the middle of a pond overlooking the coastline – PHOTOS HERE.

According to Lowell’s Facebook bio, she and her husband have been devoted supporters of preserving the culture of Tibet and actively practice Tibetan Buddhism.

Their last public appearance was in January 2013 at the Golden Globes.

Gere was previously married to supermodel Cindy Crawford from 1991-1995. Lowell and her former husband Griffin Dunne divorced in 1995 after a six year marriage. Their daughter Hannah Dunne is 23.
