Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman just finished a ten day stint at an undisclosed detox rehab facility for treatment of a heroin addiction.

The actor has struggled with substance abuse in the past, with his first rehab stint for alcohol and drugs coming shortly after he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama from the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at NYU in 1989.

According to Hoffman, he remained drug and booze free for 23 years before falling off the wagon a year ago with a slow escalation of prescription pill dependence.

Very recently he started snorting heroin and knew within a week that he needed to get that monkey off his back. Hoffman entered a detox unit and credits “a great group of friends and family” for helping him get to treatment.

The actor is reportedly clean and working on a movie project in Europe. He has two films slated for release in Nov. 2013: ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ and ‘A Most Wanted Man,’ a British thriller co-staring Rachel McAdams.

He gained fame for a number of highly successful films: ‘Magnolia’ (1999), ‘The Savages’ (2007), ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’ (2007), ‘Doubt’ (2008), ‘The Ides of March’ (2011) and ‘The Master’ (2012).

Hoffman’s biggest triumph was winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for his staring role in the 2005 big screen biography ‘Capote.’

He and his long-time partner, costume designer Mimi O’Donnell, met while working on the 1999 play ‘In Arabia We’d All Be Kings.’ They have a son, Cooper, 10, and two daughters, Tallulah, 6, and Willa, 4.
