Despite their initial reluctance, ABC Family network execs have given Denise Richards a starring role in the hour long drama ‘Socio’ because she nailed the audition.

Richards will play a mother who once ruled the social scene in her town before her teenage son spent time in jail for killing his aunt. Mama must put on a brave face now that her son is set free.

Denise wasn’t high on ABC Family’s list of potential actresses to play the role because execs felt her association with bad boy Charlie Sheen cast a negative shadow on her star power. They reluctantly gave her a chance to show what she could do with the role and she wowed everyone.

Filming will begin next month. Location scouts are currently searching for spots to shoot in the Rochester, NY area.

Richards hit Twitter on Sunday, “Heading out of town soon to start pre-production on the pilot I’m doing…so grateful & excited.” Later in the day she tweeted, “Arrived in one of my favorite places…New York! Love it here.”

A network spokesman said, “Denise will bring great depth to the role of Danny’s mother and is a wonderful addition to the cast. ABC Family is thrilled to have her as part of the drama pilot.”
