A 53-year-old woman was struck by a car and killed on Tuesday while crossing the street in front of the San Diego Convention Center to attend this week’s Comic-Con.

The woman, a “Twilight” fan identified only as Gisella G., tried to run across the street against a traffic light around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning when she was hit by a Subaru Outback. She was unconscious and bleeding severely from her head when she was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

News of Gisella’s death quickly spread among fans who had already gathered outside the convention center to camp out before the “Breaking Dawn” Comic-Con panel on Thursday morning.

The fans started a Twitter petition requesting a moment of silence in honor of Gisella G. at Thursday’s panel, and a fundraiser for her family.

The studio that produces and distributes the “Twilight” movies issued a statement, saying, “Lionsgate, Summit and the entire Twilight community are saddened by the death of a Comic-Con fan today due to a traffic accident during the hours leading up to this year’s convention in San Diego. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends. She will be respectfully remembered this Thursday in Hall H.”
