As many have speculated for months, the five-year union between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes will end in divorce, his third.
She filed court papers in New York City citing irreconcilable differences. Holmes is seeking primary custody of their daughter.
The couple wed in 2006 in a Italian castle, as witnessed by a star-studded group of guests who were flown in for the lavish occasion.
Katie’s attorney, Jonathan Wolfe released a brief statement: “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Her primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
Cruise’s rep confirmed the news: “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.”
Rumors grew stronger about a possible split when Cruise, 49, received a prestigious award from the Friars Club in Manhattan earlier this month. Accompanying him to the event were his son Connor and daughter Suri. His 33-year-old wife was not in attendance though she had been photographed out and about in NYC that day.
The couple’s last public appearance was in February. She did not appear with him at any of his recent ‘Rock of Ages’ premiere events.
Cruise and his last wife, Nicole Kidman, adopted two children during their union. Prior to that he was married to Mimi Rogers.
