Alec Baldwin and his fiancee Hilaria Thomas were exiting the Marriage License Bureau in downtown Manhattan when their day suddenly took an ugly turn.
Daily News photographer Marcus Santos was waiting outside the building along with other photographers, hoping to capture images of the couple.
Santos told the newspaper, “He comes after me, starts shoving and punching me, one time right in the chin. Then he goes the other way.”
Baldwin’s rep Matthew Hiltzik spoke with PEOPLE about the altercation, “As Alec and his fiancée were leaving City Hall, a ‘civilian’ walking in front of Alec positioned himself to obstruct the view of a photographer aggressively trying to shoot the couple.”
“The photographer was clearly frustrated, pushed past the bystander and assaulted Alec with his camera. There were no punches thrown, and any subsequent physical contact was simply Alec protecting himself.”
In order to provide his side of the story, Alec unleashed a series of comments on his Twitter page:
I guess it goes without saying that Baldwin and his fiancee will be getting married shortly … which was the story that the New York Daily News had hoped to hype when they sent their photographer out to do his job this morning.
