Lowe is 47 and still buff …

Rob Lowe looks Hollywood hot on the latest cover of Vanity Fair magazine. In the accompanying interview, he gives a glimpse into the pages of his new memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, which is set to release in May 2011.

The book is being described as a mid-career meditation on his three decades as an actor. His fame really took off in 1983 when the teen heartthrob appeared in The Outsiders.

He went to the same high school as fellow actors Emilio Estevez, Sean Penn, Chris Penn and Robert Downey Jr.

Recalling the days when he hung out with Charlie Sheen and Tom Cruise, he admits: “We competed to see who could play harder, then show up for work and still kick ass. It was always Charlie by a nose.”

He dished about some other early co-stars too. Patrick Swayze was “as cool as you want, wearing tight jeans and a tattered, sleeveless Harley Davidson t-shirt revealing his massive, ripped arms.” Matt Dillion was “a ladies man.” Tom Cruise was “open, friendly, funny, and had an almost robotic, bloodless focus and an intensity that I’ve never encountered before.”

He admits he had a rocky patch that landed him in rehab, but he has no regrets: “The Brat Pack is timeless. We should all be so lucky in our lives to create things that we’re still talking about 25 years later.”

The buff star appears in a recurring role on Parks and Recreation. Lowe was recently reported to be on the short list to replace his old pal Sheen on Two and a Half Men. Charlie thought Rob would be great in the role but Lowe turned it down flat.
