Tucson Memorial Service honors the fallen …

President Barack Obama delivered an emotional speech last night in Tucson, Arizona to remember those who were slain and those who survived Sunday’s massacre at the hands of Jared Lee Loughner.

Six were killed and fourteen were wounded, including congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Of the senseless tragedy, Obama declared: “Our hearts are broken — and yet, our hearts also have reason for fullness.”

His comments about nine-year-old victim Christina Taylor Green were particularly poignant: “Here was a young girl who was just becoming aware of our democracy; just beginning to understand the obligations of citizenship. She had been elected to her student council, she saw public service as something exciting, something hopeful. She was off to meet her congresswoman, someone she was sure was good and important.”

He went on to say: “I want us to live up to her expectations. I want our democracy to be as good as she imagined it.”
