Florence and the Machine may be well on the way to success in the United States after a breakthrough performance on the MTV VMA Awards Sunday night.

24-year-old Florence Welch, a critically acclaimed English pop artist, is a already a commercial success in the U.K. Her debut album, Lungs, was released in the United Kingdom in July 2009, and has remained in the top 40 for 58 consecutive weeks, making it one of the best selling albums of 2009 and 2010 so far.

The VMA-nominated Dog Days Are Over was the second single released from the album. It was used in the opening of the pilot for USA network’s new spy thriller “Covert Affairs,” and most recently used in trailers for the Julia Roberts film, “Eat Pray Love.”

Florence’s backing band, The Machine, is mostly composed of session musicians, who differ depending on Welch’s requirements when performing. The name comes from a teenage collaboration with Isabella “Machine” Summers, who parted company with Welch for a time, but later returned to become her regular keyboard player.
