Actress MacKenzie Phillips is up to her neck in hot water after being arrested at LAX today. She is the daughter of The Mamas and The Papas singer John Phillips, who also struggled with substance abuse prior to his death in 2001. The police gave this statement to People magazine:
“She was being screened by airport security when a small amount of what appeared to be heroin and cocaine were found on her person. She was arrested at 10:00 a.m. and is still in custody.”
This has been nearly a lifetime battle for MacKenzie, who lost her role on the popular sitcom One Day at a Time as a teen because of her substance abuse. Law enforcement officials reported that the substances were found in balloons and baggies.
Hopefully this will be a sobering wake-up call that will compel Phillips to seek treatment. We wish her well.
