The political scene on the eastern seaboard gets more salacious by the moment. New York Governor David Paterson has been officially in office for less than 24 hours and already we are hearing that he, too, was involved in a long term extramarital affair.
Disgraced ex Gov. Eliot Spitzer stepped down officially at noon yesterday and his Lt. Gov. took the oath of office and assumed his new duties with an eloquent speech that was warmly received. The new governor is legally blind, a fact that has not held back his illustrious political career.
His latest revelation, however, has set some people back on their heels. Is there no politician without skeletons? It is becoming increasingly apparent that sexual dalliances are commonplace.
Paterson, 53, and his wife, Michelle, 46, shared with New York Daily News that they had both been involved in intimate affairs with others during a rocky patch in their marriage several years back. The new governor admitted to having a 2-3 years relationship with another woman, beginning in 1999.
The new First Couple of New York agreed to speak publicly about the difficulties in their marriage because rumors were circulating in Albany, were they reside. One rumor suggested that the new governor had a love child with another woman. Both David and Michelle vehemently deny that claim.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out with the residents of New York. It would appear there is some uneasiness in the governor’s mansion. They are banking on things settling down now that they have been candid about their past affairs. Time will tell.
