Ironman, starring Robert Downey Jr. as a guy dressed in metal, turned to gold over the weekend with receipts of $100.7 million on it’s opening weekend. That gives the film bragging rights as the second best premiere ever for a non-sequel. The worldwide total box office take was $201 million with the $96.7 million haul in 57 countries outside the U.S.
The Paramount picture features Downey as billionaire arms designer Tony Stark, a hard drinking womanizer who builds a high-tech suit and becomes a superhero. He has a change of heart after he’s taken captive and sees firsthand the devastation his weapons cause.
The film is directed by Jon Favreau, and also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard.
