Michael Vick, convicted of running a dogfighting ring, has served his 18 month sentence and will be eligible to play NFL football under a conditional reinstatement according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The announcement was made on Monday, July 27, 2009, just one week after Vick was released from prison.
In a video statement, Goodell said that the athlete is free to take part in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and is able to appear in the final two preseason games. Vick will be eligible for full reinstatement in Week 6 of the season, October 18-19.
The former Atlanta Falcon’s quarterback was suspended in August 2007 for bankrolling a dogfighting operation.
Goodell instructed Vick, “I urge you to take full advantage of the resources available to support you and dedicate yourself to rebuilding your life and your career. If you do this, the NFL will support you.”
According to Sports Illustrated, four teams have said they are not interested; they are the Falcons, Giants, Jets and Cowboys.
