In North Carolina being a scorned wife just might pay huge dividends.

In 2005, Cynthia Shackelford discovered her husband Allan Shackelford – a Greensboro, North Carolina attorney – was having an affair with Anne Lundquist, currently the Dean of Students at Wells College.

“She set her sights on him. … She knew he was married,” Shackelford said of Lundquist. “You don’t go after married men and break up families.”

So Shackelford, 60, set her sights on getting even with the woman who wrecked her 33-year marriage. She filed an alienation of affection lawsuit against Lundquist and, last week, a Guilford County jury awarded the spurned wife $4 million in punitive damages and $5 million in compensatory damages, for a total settlement of $9 million under North Carolina case law.
