Bono, famed U2 frontman, will be out of commission temporarily after undergoing emergency back surgery on Friday. The 50-year-old musician from Ireland injured himself while practicing for the band’s return to North America for the next leg of their 360 Tour. The first venue, in Salt Lake City on June 3, has been postponed.

A message on U2.com said, “Bono has undergone emergency back surgery for an injury sustained during tour preparation training. He was admitted to a specialist neurosurgery unit in a Munich hospital, and is under the care of neurosurgeon Dr. Jorg Tonn and Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt. Bono will spend the next few days there, before returning home to recuperate.”

The message continued, “Once his condition has been assessed further, a statement will be made regarding the impact on forthcoming tour dates.”

The 360 Tour allows fans to surround a giant circular platform. The 2009 leg earned U2 a reported $109 million.
