Landon Donovan scored a late goal for the US, cinching a win against Algeria 1-0, and launching the U.S. to first place in Group C ahead of England. It is the first time since 1930 that the U.S. topped its group.

Both teams missed several close chances during regulation play. A 0-0 result would have eliminated both teams, with England just completing its win over Slovenia. But that isn’t how it ended. The USA advanced as the FIFA 2010 Group C victor — thanks to Donovan’s goal, during injury time, that sent fans into absolute delirium. Some are calling it the “Miracle on Grass”.

Donovan, who scored his fourth career World Cup goal said, “I’m shocked. I’m so proud of our guys. Unbelievable. Clint made a good run in the middle, the ball fell to me …. time kind of stopped. You can’t miss from there.”

Team USA will now play the runner-up from Group D in the second round. From there…the sky is the limit. Many are already looking for a 1980 Lake Placid type finish.

England also finished with five points, but with an inferior goal difference, after its 1-0 win over Slovenia at Port Elizabeth.

Donovan, who plays for L.A. Galaxy, married actress Bianca Kajlich on December 31, 2006. They separated in July 2009 and their divorce was finalized late last year. He currently resides in Manhattan Beach, California.
