Andrew Garfield has been cast as the new Spider-Man for the fourth installment of the film, to be directed by Marc Webb.

Sony Pictures confirmed the news on their Twitter page, tweeting: BREAKING NEWS: ANDREW GARFIELD CAST AS PETER PARKER IN NEXT SPIDER-MAN

The relatively unknown 26-year-old Los Angeles-born actor has lived in England since he was 4, where he received strong notices on stage and screen, including a best-actor BAFTA award for his work on “Boy A.”.

Three years ago he was seen in Robert Redford’s “Lions for Lambs,” and was named One of 10 Actors to Watch. He was most recently cast in the upcoming film about the Facebook founders, “The Social Network.”

“Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker,” says Spidey 4 director Mark Webb.

Garfield replaces Toby Maquire, beating out Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Logan Lerman, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, and Michael Angarano for the role of Spider-Man 4’s Peter Parker, after Sony execs viewed the screen tests of the finalists last Friday.

Garfield’s salary on the film is reportedly around $500,000 for the first film, $1 million for the second, and $2 million for the third.

Production on the 3D film will begin in December, with a release date of July 3,2012.
