Chicago Cubs rookie Tyler Colvin was injured in a freakish accident during a game against the Florida Marlins on Sunday. The outfielder was hospitalized after being impaled by a splinter from a broken bat.

The fragment struck Colvin in the chest, coming only a few inches from his heart. He is listed in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami on Monday and will be out for the rest of the season.

The Cubs released this statement by Colvin: “I want to thank Cubs fans for their support all season, especially right now, and let everyone know that I’m doing OK. I also want to thank … the EMTs at the ballpark and everyone here at the hospital.”

Colvin continued: “You never want to have a season end early, and I’m disappointed not to make it to the finish line with the rest of my teammates. That being said, I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to play for the Cubs in my rookie season. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
