Peter O’Toole, with his children, calls it a career wrap …

British actor Peter O’Toole turns 80 in a few weeks and has decided that retirement from show business is in order.

His most memorable body of work is thought by many to be his starring role in the iconic film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ circa 1962.

The veteran actor was nominated eight times for an Academy Award and received an Academy Honorary Award in 2003 for his lifelong contributions to film. He initially bristled at the idea and fired off a letter that included this statement, “I’m still in the game and would like more time to win the lovely bugger outright.”

His children, actress Kate O’Toole and actor Lorcan O’Toole, convinced him to show up for the ceremony and accept the award from Meryl Streep.

Peter O’Toole released this statement, “My career has brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort, it is time for me to chuck in the sponge. The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back.”

“It’s my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end one’s stay. I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell.”
