Andy Cohen may have defended longtime pals Teresa and Joe Giudice last night, but in his new book, he is less than kind to them in his new book.

On The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 6 Episode 18, Teresa Giudice broke down and apologized as her January 5 prison sentence looms.

Andy was both somber and kind as he closed out the reunion show, which Teresa lamented would likely be her last. It was a rare touching moment.

Well, he wasn’t always singing such a sympathetic tune.

In The Andy Cohen Diaries: A Deep Look At a Shallow Year, Cohen recalls interviewing the two stars that day about their shocking indictment for fraud.

“It was like pulling teeth,” the outspoken producer says of the embattled spouses. “They are either very un-introspective or in complete denial. Or both.”

As you know if you watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey online, Cohen notes that the two didn’t seem to grasph the consequences of their behavior.

“I said, ‘So… you guys are facing 50 years in prison, and they were like, ‘Is it 50 years? We thought it was 100. Is it 50 years both or just one or…’” he writes.

“So,” he notes with his typical dry wit and more than a little bit of befuddlement, “that’s something they are going to want to clarify with their attorneys.”

Teresa Giudice and Joe Giudice did face 50 years each, but were eventually sentenced to 15 months and 41 months respectively back in October.

After the judge’s ruling, the parents to four daughters sat down with Cohen to publicly discuss their fate, and both of them seemed in denial even then.

“I mean, it was very unexpected, I don’t even know what to say,” Teresa said.

By last night, though, it seemed like reality had sunken in for a sullen Giudice, who choked back tears and seemed genuinely remorseful for the first time.

A year in Dunbury should hasten that reality check, and then some.
