Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder’s breakup was bound to happen, friends say, but that doesn’t mean any bad blood will surface on The Vampire Diaries set.

“There was no mean spiritedness behind of either of their motives” for ending their three-year romance, a source close to the couple explains.

The split, in some ways, was bound to happen.

The couple’s ten-year age gap – he’s 34, she’s 24 – may have played a major role in the split, as Nina “decided she wanted to experience other things.”

 

Also, “the relationship kind of brewed out of a friendship and the fact that they had to get into a romance for the show,” as their characters have.

“The breakup was inevitable.”

Neither has publicly commented on the split, and we don’t expect they will, though Ian may have been hinting at the end of the romance on Twitter.

Quoting playwright Lillian Hellman on Thursday, he sent out a cryptic Tweet: “A thought for today: ‘People change and forget to tell each other.'”

Regardless of what happened, you’ll get to experience their on-screen chemistry for at least another year. TVD was renewed for Season 5 by the CW.
