Captain Jack Sparrow is back.

But is that really a good thing? Following two subpar follow-ups to one of the most enjoyable films of all-time, Johnny Depp has reprised his beloved role in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - and critics don't seem very happy about it.

Read on for a rundown of their scathing critiques...

If you want to burden your movie from the outset, give it a protagonist who can't grow, can't change, can't feel and wants nothing. Then give Depp total license to mug his way out of this confinement. - The San Francisco Chronicle

Depp, back again as the swashbuckling miscreant who favors guy-liner and gold, somehow manages to keep this ship of fools afloat. But just barely. - The Los Angeles Times

There's enough of Jack doing his wild hand gestures and lucking his way into the story that Depp fans will dig it. These Stranger Tides lead to a shallow pool, but sometimes a nice wading session might be all you require. - E! News

There's little if anything here to keep us emotionally invested, and so the pile-it-on mutinies and sword fights and perilous dives off vertiginous cliffs exist just to wow us. - The Philadelphia Inquirer

Penelope Cruz. The Fountain of Youth. And Blackbeard.

All these aspects of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides were introduced in the first trailer for this upcoming blockbuster.

Now, the studio has released another preview for the return of Captain Jack Sparrow and it makes one thing clear: mermaids will play a key role in the May 20 release. Yes, mermaids. Check out the following promo now and also be on the look out for Keith Richards and a mutinous Black Pearl...

Captain Jack is (almost) back.

On May 20, Johnny Depp will reprise the role that truly made him an icon, as he steps back into the swashbuckling shoes of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. We've got an early look at a scene from the movie here:

Vanessa Paradis, Johnny Depp

The fourth installment of this franchise will find Jack and Barbossa seeking the Fountain of Youth.  Along the way, Depp's beloved character will meet a former flame, as seen above and played by Penelope Cruz.

"What's most interesting about Pirates 4 is you don't have to connect the dots for these subplots and sub-characters," Depp told USA Today. "It felt like a fresh, clean slate."

Neither Orlando Bloom nor Keira Knightley appears in the film. Check out two more scenes from the blockbuster HERE and HERE.
