Chris Colfer stunned the television world today via an announcement on Twitter:

He will NOT be returning to Glee for the Fox show’s sixth and final season.

The actor – who originated the role of gay high school student Kurt Hummel – sent the Twitterverse into chaos just a few minutes ago by writing the following:

“Due to personal issues, I have been let go from the cast of GLEE. Explanations will come shortly…”

Colfer has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and earned a Golden Globe win for his portrayal of this New Directions member.

Glee Season 6, meanwhile, will mark the final run of episodes for this musical comedy. It is expected to debut in early 2015.

UPDATE: “We’ve been alerted that Chris Colfer’s Twitter account has been hacked. Rumors of his dismissal from Glee could not be further from the truth,” reads a statement from 20th Century Fox TV. “We love Chris and look forward to working with him again this season.”
