Devonta Pollard, a freshman forward on the University of Alabama basketball team, was arrested Tuesday and charged with kidnapping a six-year old girl in Mississippi.
Pollard's mother, Jesse Mae Brown Pollard, was actually arrested last month as part of this conspiracy, which stems from an April 30 incident in which Jashayla Hopson was taken from her home.
She was found unharmed the following day.
Six arrests have now been made overall in a case that The Associated Press reports grew out of an ongoing land dispute involving the child’s mother and Jesse Mae Brown Pollard.
University of Alabama coach Anthony Grant was asked about Devonta Pollard last week at the SEC meetings in Destin, Florida and said that he was still a member of the team, but was “dealing with issues bigger than basketball.”
It's unclear what role he played in the kidnapping, but surveillance footage a hotel in April captured a woman walking with Hopson and leaving in a gold or tan Cadillac Deville, according to court records.
That car is registered to Devonta.
