Food Porn Busts ID Thieves: Instagram Steak Pic Leads Cops to Massive Crime Ring

by at . Comments

For Broward County, Fla., law enforcement officials, porn has never been so useful. But we're not talking about porn of the Farrah Abraham variety.

If it weren't for a shared photo of a juicy steak - known as "food porn" in social media parlance - a major identity theft ring would still be operational.

Food Porn Thieves!

Nathaniel Troy Maye, 44, and Tiwanna Tenise Thomason, 39, were arrested after a photo he posted online led police to Morton's steakhouse in Ft. Lauderdale.

Maye, from Harlem, and Thomason, from Miramar, Fla., were being tracked by investigators after an anonymous person recently tipped off the IRS.

The mole told the feds that a man named "Troy" had been boasting about stealing as many as 700,000 identities, according to The New York Daily News.

As for the aforementioned steak photo, Instagram alerted eagle-eyed authorities to the fact that the duo were at Morton's for an alleged data exchange.

The photo will now be used as evidence against the pair.

Authorities reported that they found the now-incarcerated pair had stolen at least 50 people's identities, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

They could be imprisoned for up to 12 years as a result.

The term "food porn" came to be because food photos have become a social media staple among people who like to document foods they've tried and tasted.

Normally it's harmless. But we wouldn't recommend posting any - along with the location no less - recipes / food porn if you're committing a federal crime.

Just an idea. Ask Troy how that worked out.
