Rush Limbaugh Losing Sponsors Over Sandra Fluke "Slut" Remarks

by at .

Rush Limbaugh is literally paying for the comments he made this week about Sandra Fluke.

On Thursday, the Georgetown University Law School student - who has been a vocal supporter of the Obama administration's decision to require insurance companies, even those used by religiously-affiliated employers, to cover the cost of contraception - was denied a chance to speak at a House Oversight and Government Reform hearing on religious liberty and birth control.

She proceeded, though, to take part in a press conference in which Fluke told the story of a friend who was prescribed birth control to deal with ovarian cysts; could not afford the cost when school insurance refused to pay for it; and has since suffered grave medical consequences as a result.

Fluke also said the price of birth control in general can be thousands a year. Limbaugh's response?

He referred to Fluke as a "slut" and a "prostitute" and added:

"If we're going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch."

Limbaugh said that her speech made it clear "she's having so much sex she can't pay for it, and we should."

(NOTE TO RUSH: That's not how birth control works. You don't pop a pill each time you have intercourse.)

The issue has since taken on national prominence, with President Obama even calling Fluke and telling her her parents ought to be proud of her actions. And now the scandal has hit the Internet.

The hashtag #BoycottRush has spread around Twitter and two Facebook pages calling for a boycott have garnered more than 18,000 and 6,000 Likes by this morning. Moreover, nine companies - including Legal Zoom, Citrix Success, Heart and Body Extract, AutoZone and Quicken Loans - have pulled ads from Limbaugh's show.

Where do you stand on this issue? Should Limbaugh have referred to the student as a "slut?

We never focus on how Sandra Fluke went to testify about how her friend lost an ovary because her employers health insurance did not provide coverage for this particular prescription on the basis of their own beliefs. Most drugs have various uses and she went to speak on how an institutions beliefs caused a woman permanent damage. As an employer myself, with a neice taking birth control for a non-contraceptive reason, I don't see this as any employers business. Forget Rush Limbaugh and all that followed. I as an employer shouldn't have the right to say lung cancer is your fault and I'm not covering it in my company wide insurance.

And just to be crass, because why not I have the anonymity of the internet at my disposal. I think if my tax dollars are going to help you sad old men get erections then i should get something out of it, please upload as many videos of your saggy little boners as possible, so I can laugh, and make a fun little montage to remind me why your genitals are so much more important than mine *although it should be noted that none of these things would actually be paid for out of tax dollars, people just like to throw that word around to stir up a cloud of angry idiots, the money would be coming out of the employers allocated amount for healthcare and each company would be responsible for regulating costs themselves

If insurance companies cover viagra (which a majority of them do) how can it be fair to say that oral contraceptives are wrong, and that is just comparing the sexual uses. Many women use the pill to help regulate their menstrual cycle, and anemic women use the pill to help reduce their symptoms. Also, the pill can lessen the uncomfortable side effects that go with that time of the month. Also, it has been said before and it will be said again, the pill is taken daily, not every time you have sex, in fact you have to take the pill consistently for 8 days before it is considered effective. This isn't like your little blue pills that you take as needed.

Rush has a huge audience of adoring fans who trust him and respect him and that doesn't change over a few off colored remarks. Rush's fans will be there with him through this. As for the sponsors pulling out, BIG MISTAKE! 15 million listeners is a huge audience NOT to reach with advertising everyday. Those 15 million will still be there listening to Rush as usual everyday, but we won't be hearing those sponsors everyday. BIG MISTAKE sponsors.
