28-year-old singer The Weeknd dropped dropped a sing-song EP titled My Dear Melancholy.
The Grammy winner's fans immediately dove in and gave the songs a listen.
Some of the lyrics, however, have caught people's attention.
The song "Call Out My Name" includes the lyrics: "We found each other/ I helped you out of a broken place/ You gave me comfort/ But falling for you was my mistake."
And in "Privilege," he sings: "Enjoy your privileged life/ 'Cause I'm not gonna hold you through the night/ We said our last goodbyes/ So let's just try to end it with a smile."
Fans can't help but wonder how much of this new EP is about Selena Gomez and their breakup. And, for that matter, how much of it is about Bella Hadid.
Take a look at the fan responses, because these are wild.
The Weeknd was pretty chill about when he'd release the EP
EP, by the way, stands for "extended player," meaning that it's longer than a single but shorter than an album.
Here's the album art
My Dear Melancholy's art is haunting, but so is the title.
The Weeknd even shared with fans that he was working on it
The release date, however, was very last minute
Listeners immediately thought of Selena Gomez
We should note that reports claimed that The Weeknd had seemingly lost interest in her towards the end of their relationship. Perhaps those reports were mistaken ... or perhaps The Weeknd is feeling regrets.
Seriously, they're happy with Selena
They say that a lot of the best art comes from pain and suffering.
Fans could really feel The Weeknd's pain
By the way, his real name is Abel Tesfaye. His older fans knew him by that name, first.
Fans joked (we hope!) how about how the new EP had changed their lives
Again, we're almost positive that this is a joke.
Some lyrical interpretations were mind-blowing
We know that The Weeknd was right by Selena's side as she was rushed to the hospital with kidney failure. This interpretation might not be far off.
Not everyone immediately jumped aboard the Selena bandwagon
The Weeknd has multiple famous exes, folks. Bella Hadid might have been one of his muses.
Some pointed out some perceived hypocrisy from fans
It may be that different people shamed Taylor, or that the people who once shamed Taylor are now more enlightened.
Fans praised his honesty
A lot of people feel that way about at least some of their exes.
More continued to thank Selena
Selena has done many things that deserve praise, but ... does she really deserve credit for The Weeknd's music?
This EP really got to people
Music in the shower is great, but sad music might not be ideal if you're showering before work.
Here's a very nuanced critique of fan responses
Honestly, there seem to be a lot of double standards among music fans.
Just this photo makes us sad.
Please, someone give that person a hug.
This was hardly the only person to interpret his lyrics as meaning that he would have been willing to donate a kidney, but ... dang.
Most listeners felt sympathy
It's unclear if this person means Selena or Bella or both.
Again, we hope that these tweets are jokes
One thing's for sure: The Weeknd sure knows how to spread the pain.
