Last Night’s Ellies are Today’s Talking Points

You’re going to hear a lot about the Ellies for the next 24 hours, perhaps even 48, until the floodgates break open about whether NBC renews Scrubs.

So let’s just get through the talking points you’ll need to know this week as we sum up yesterday evening’s event at Lincoln Center.

ASME executive director Marlene Kahan shouldn’t go the humor route next time. New York’s Adam Moss had a very good night (won five awards, even one for the website). The New Yorker’s David Remnick had a very bad night (no awards for those nine nominations). Edie Falco popped in to threaten anyone who writes badly about The Sopranos; audience giggles. Jann Wenner didn’t have to commit suicide, winning general excellence for his circulation category. Kevin Bacon drew laughs by reading his own glowing film reviews before announcing The Nation’s win for Reviews and Criticism. Ann Curry took the stage and delivered her introduction like she was still on Dateline. Anna Wintour was cold. As ice. Ellen DeGeneres’ video intro was silly, but not nearly as silly as her W spread.

Graydon Carter wore jeans again this year. He also had a great story prepared for Christopher Hitchens’ win: Chris is working on a piece about self-improvement, where he goes to the gym, gets manicures, and waxing. “The back, the crack and the sack,” Carter tells him. Hitchens responds: “In for a penny, in for a pound.” You’re going to hear this story for the next six months, minimum.

And lastly: Vogue lost. As expected.
