Russian tennis powerhouse Vera Zvonareva, who turned 26 on Tuesday, has made it into the final round of the 2010 U.S. Open after defeating beautiful blonde #1 seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 on Friday.
Zvonareva came in as the #7 seed but managed to put together a combination of powerful serves coupled with assertive play to beat the Danish player.
Afterward Vera said: “It was very difficult for both of us with this wind today. I think I was patient and aggressive like I was in previous matches. I had five newly strung rackets before the match. In one hour, three of them were gone. I don’t think anything like this has happened to me before.”
She will go head-to-head against Belgian pro Kim Clijsters in the final round on Saturday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. eastern.
Wozniacki, who had been riding a 13-match winning streak and led the tour with 31 victories on hard courts this year, racked up 31 unforced errors for the day. She said: “I made some mistakes today that I usually don’t do. It was a tough day for me. That’s the way tennis is sometimes.”
