Trevor Bayne wins it for the legendary Wood Brothers

Trevor Bayne stunned the NASCAR world by winning the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 20, 2011. He became the youngest driver to ever win the event — accomplishing the amazing feat in an elapsed time of 04:02:54.

The former record holder was Jeff Gordon, who won the 500 at age 26 in 1997. Gordon said: “I think it’s very cool. Trevor’s a good kid, and I love the Wood Brothers. I’m really happy for him. And I think it’s great for the sport.”

Trevor celebrated his 20th birthday yesterday and followed that up by winning a huge victory in his second Sprint Cup Series start. Still working on facial hair, he only shaves once a week and isn’t embarrassed to admit that his favorite television show is The Rugrats.

Bayne beat the field in the #21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford and then couldn’t figure out how to get to victory lane. He said: “I think I’m dreaming. I really do. To win my first Daytona 500 race — are you kidding me?”

The Wood Brothers team marked its 5th Daytona victory thanks to the kid who left his teenage years behind just days ago. Today marked their first 500 win since 1976.

Finishing behind Bayne in the thrilling overtime win, by just 0.118 seconds, was Carl Edwards. Third place went to David Gilliland, followed by Bobby Labonte and Kurt Busch.
