Madonna and Michael Moore joined forces in Detroit, Michigan this weekend at the Traverse City Film Festival for the midwestern premiere of a documentary I Am Because We Are at the State Theater.

The duo teamed up for the release of a documentary about the effects of AIDS on orphaned children living in Malawi – the second poorest country in the world. The film is reportedly a portrait of a country in distress – a personal journey and a call to action.

Madonna, who was raised in Detroit, told the crowd of 500 that it was good to be home. She was quoted as saying:

“I don’t get here enough. It’s great to be bringing my movie to a place that feels familiar. You can take the girl out of Michigan but you can’t take Michigan out of the girl.”

The crowd serenaded the Material Girl with a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday. Madge will turn 50 on August 16, 2008. Her parents were there for the occasion and sat with their granddaughter Lourdes Leon near the back of the theater while Madonna and Michael Moore carried out their duties as hosts of the event.

Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie adopted a child from Malawi. David Banda joined their family in October 2006 but the adoption was only recently finalized. The couple also have a son Rocco, 7, and Madonna has a daughter, mentioned above, from a earlier relationship with actor and personal trainer Carlos Leon.
