The Green Bay Packers have traded quarterback Brett Favre to the New York Jets. After a month-long saga that fractured the relationship between the Hall of Famer and the franchise, the final split became obvious Tuesday night when coach Mike McCarthy told reporters that after nearly six hours of “brutally honest” conversation, he determined Favre didn’t have the right mindset to play for the Packers.
After the controversy surrounding Favre’s retirement and subsequent desire to return, reconciliation seemed unlikely.
“The train has left the station, whatever analogy you want,” McCarthy said. “He needs to jump on the train and let’s go. Or, if we can’t get past things that have happened, I have to keep the train moving.”
Tensions had been mounting in recent weeks as word began leaking to the public that the Packers may have a serious QB controversy on their hands and McCarthy said he was happy the rest of his players were getting a chance to move forward.
It looks like the Jets will release quarterback Chad Pennington as a result of the trade to free up cap room to fit Favre’s contract under the salary cap.
